Rhodochrosite (MnCO3) is a manganese carbonate, the classic color of which is rose-pink. It is found in hydrothermal ore veins formed at moderate temperatures and in high-temperature metamorphic deposits. Rhodochrosite is both soft and fragile, and therefore faceted stones are rare and demand a great deal of skill from a stone cutter. In Butte Montana, it is so abundant that it is mined as an ore of manganese. Other notable localities include Romania, Gabon, Mexico, Russia, Japan, and Colorado.
Rhodochrosite was named in 1800 from the Greek rhodon, meaning "rose," and chros, ,meaning "color," in reference to its rose-red color.
